BJP to stall Budget session on Nanavati report Saturday, February 12 2005 11:58 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Alleging that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government was not publishing the Nanavati Commission report on 1984 anti-Sikh riots as it indicted "many prominent Congressmen", Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday (Feb 11, 2005) threatened to stall the Budget Session of Parliament if the contents were not made public.
"We will take up the issue in Parliament and will not let the Government off the hook. I will ask (BJP president) L K Advani to consider stalling of Parliament proceedings until the report is made public," BJP Zonal in-charge Madanlal Khurana told reporters in New Delhi.
He claimed Home Minister Shivraj Patil, to whom the 185-page report was submitted by Justice G T Nanavati on Wednesday (Feb 9, 2005), "deliberately avoided" accepting it within January 31, when the Commission's term expired.
"The Congress is afraid that publication of the report can affect its chances in the ongoing elections, which is why the Home Minister first delayed accepting the report and is now not publishing it.
"On the other hand, the U C Banerjee interim report on the Godhra fire was given so much wide publicity because Railway Minister Laloo Prasad wanted to use it politically," he charged.
Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan said that the party would hold city-wide protests to put pressure on the Government.
