Medha Patkar, 120 arrested for illegal assembly

Mumbai: Narmada Bachav Andolan (NBA) leader and social activists Medha Patkar and Vijaya Chauhan were today (Feb 12, 2005) arrested along with 120 others for illegal assembly, while protesting the demolition of slums by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in Mumbai.

Patkar and others, who have been arrested under sections 143, 147 and 447 for leading a tirade against BMC's demolition drive on February 2, have been lodged in the Deonar police station while few are kept in Shivaji Nagar police station, police said.

Most of the arrested are women, police said.

Earlier on February 5, an FIR was filed and a case booked against Patkar for unlawful assembly and an offence was registered against her for violating the prohibitory orders for assembly of more than five people.
