Salim Sonda, extortionist and alleged henchman of the Dawood Ibrahim gang was arrested by crime branch in the Agripada area of Central Mumbai, police said today (Feb 15, 2005).
On a tip-off, Crime Branch (unit three) laid a trap and arrested Salim late last night (Feb 14, 2005), police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dhananjay Kamlakar said Salim was a notorious extortionist and was wanted in several cases of extortion and serious crimes.
He said that Salim was close to Dawood's sister who lives in Mumbai and had attended the wedding ceremony of Dawood's nephew Danesh in Mumbai few months ago.
Police had kept surveillance at the marriage venue but Salim gave them a slip.
