Sania breaks into top 100 in world rankings: WTA
Tuesday, February 15 2005 12:06 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Sania Mirza, who won her maiden Women's Tennis Association (WTA) title in Hyderabad, broke into the top hundred in the world ranking released by the WTA yesterday (Feb 14, 2005).

Sania, who was 134th last week, jumped 35 places to 99th in the latest world rankings following her historic triumph on Saturday (Feb 12, 2005).

American Lindsay Davenport occupied the top spot while French star Amelie Mauresmo displaced Australian Open champion Serena Williams from the second rank.

The 18-year-old Sania, who had set herself a target of making it into the top 100 at the beginning of the year, had a sensational start to the season when she became the first Indian to reach the third round of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open last month (January).

She continued her superb show in front for her home fans as she claimed the $ 140,000 Hyderabad Open upsetting ninth seed Alyona Bondarenko of Ukraine.

Indians also fared well in the junior boy's ranking list, released yesterday by the International Tennis Federation with three of them making it to the top 100 led by Jeevan Neduncheziyan in 34th place.

Vivek Shokeen was placed 43rd while Sanam Singh was in the 89th spot.
