Slum demolition: Maharashtra CM to meet Sonia today
Wednesday, February 16 2005 12:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh is to meet Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi today (Feb16, 2005) to discuss developmental projects in the city and other related issues.

He would be accompanied by Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Prabha Rau, All India Congress committee (AICC) General Secretary in-charge of Maharashtra Margret Alva and all the MPs from Mumbai, Congress sources said at Mumbai yesterday (Feb 15, 2005).

They added that the recent slum demolition drive in Mumbai was likely to dominate the meeting.

Sources said that the meeting was conveyed after Alva informed Sonia about the growing discontent by the slum dwellers and several NGO's (Non-governmental Organizations) about the way in which the demolition has been carried out without providing an alternate shelter.

Earlier in the day Congress MP Gurudas Kamat had met the commissioner of BMC (Mumbai Municipal Corporation) and has asked him to halt the demolition immediately.

Even yesterday, slums were demolished outside the International Airport in Kurla area in the North-West Mumbai, BMC officials said.
