Four Assam Rifles jawans killed, several injured

Imphal: Four Assam Rifles Jawans were killed and several others injured when insurgents ambushed a heavy security party at Kumbi area in Bishenpur district of Manipur last evening (Feb 16, 2005), official sources said.

Sources said that insurgents attacked an Assam Rifles petrol at Kumbi area, about 50 kms south of Imphal at 17:00 hrs (IST).

Assam Rifles personnel returned the fire and casualty if any on the side of insurgents was not immediately known.

Sources said identity of insurgents was not immediately known but cadres of Manipur People's Liberation Front were active in the area.

A senior security official on condition of anonymity said that the attackers used highly sophisticated materials and weapons including RDX when they ambushed the Assam Rifles. No Assam Rifles official was available for immediate comment.
