Justice Bhagwati member of Timor abuse commission

United Nations: Justice Prafullachandra Bhagwati of India has been appointed on the United Nations three-member independent Commission of Experts to review the prosecution of serious human rights violations committed in East Timor in 1999, the world body announced yesterday (Feb 18, 2005).

The other members are Prof Yozo Yokota of Japan and Shaista Shameem of Fiji.

Bhagwati is a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Commission would assess the progress made by the judicial process in Dili.

Timor-Leste and Jakarta, Indonesia and make recommendations to Secretary General Kofi Annan with regard to possible future action.

It would also consider how its analysis could be of assistance to the commission of Truth and Friendship, which Indonesia and Timor-Leste have agreed to establish.
