Sex scandal: Accused get two days police remand Saturday, February 19 2005 17:45 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Ahmedabad:
A local court today (Feb 19, 2005) sent four accused in the Swaminarayan Vadtal sect sex scam case to two days police remand till February 22.
Three of the accused were arrested yesterday from Surat while one from Saila town of Surendranagar for their alleged involvement in the case, where Swaminarayan sadhus of Vadtal sect were caught on camera in compromising positions with women.
Metropolitan Magistrate D V Vaid today remanded Bhimji Bhagat, Nandlal Kala, Himmat Lehri of Surat and Karsan Patel of Saila to police remand till February 22 after the Crime Branch sought time for questioning the accused.
Four others, who were sent to remand earlier this week in this case, including Swami Bhaktiswarup of Junagadh Swaminaryan temple, who features in the explicit CD, will be produced in the court on February 22.
The Crime Branch had busted this case on February 15 with arrest of Bhaktiswarup and three others after receiving complaints that an explicit CD of sadhus were doing rounds in Junagadh, Ahmedabad and Anand districts.
According to the police, the scam was a result of rivalry between two factions of Vadtal Swaminarayan sect, where the groups were trying to defame each other in order to establish control over the temple at Vadtal in Nadiad district of Gujarat.
