Lucknow: Curfew continued in Hussainabad area under Thakurganj police circle in Lucknow for the second consecutive day today (Feb 21, 2005) and there was no report of any untoward incident from anywhere amidst tight security measures.

Curfew was clamped in Hussainabad area yesterday (Feb 20, 2005), police said in Lucknow.

The Rapid Action Force (RAF), Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and civil police personnel were patrolling the affected area while senior civil and police officers were also camping on the spot to monitor the situation, they said.

Trouble started yesterday when some people opened fire following an altercation over the Tazia procession, wounding seven persons, including a policeman. Three of the injured had later died in the hospital.

Religious leaders of both Shias and Sunnis also cancelled the evening 'Majlis' (Moharram gathering) in view of the tense situation.

The State Government had announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh each for the next of the kin of deceased and Rs 3 lakh each for the seriously injured.
