S A R Geelani requests SC to transfer probe to CBI Wednesday, February 23 2005 16:24 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
S A R Geelani, who survived a murderous attack recently, today (Feb 23, 2005) told the Supreme Court that he is being victimised by Delhi Police, which treats him like an accused and pleaded for transfer of the probe into the attack to CBI.
When an emotionally charged Counsel Kamini Jaiswal accused the police of not even sparing the victims' relatives and lawyers from harassment through interrogation, a Bench headed by Justice T V Reddy posted the matter for hearing tomorrow (Feb 24, 2005) while advising her not to get emotional and to exercise restraint.
"There is no point in getting emotionally charged. Exercising of restraint is very much necessary," the bench observed while stating that it will go through the status report of the probe into the incident filed by Delhi Police.
"If some justice is to be done, the probe into the case should be transferred to an independent investigating agency like CBI as the victim of the crime is being treated like an accused and further victimised," Advocate Kamini Jaiswal said.
The Bench observed that it would go through the status report filed by the Delhi Police on the investigation done so far into the case and hear tomorrow Geelani's application seeking transfer of the probe to an independent agency.
Geelani was shot at near his lawyer Nandita Haksar's house on February 8 and was discharged yesterday from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where he underwent surgery.
