Cabinet okays setting up of disaster management

New Delhi: The Union Cabinet today (Feb 24, 2005) approved a proposal for setting up of National Disaster Management Authority to be headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and building up of specialised capabilities for rapid intervention in case of calamities.

Spotlight: Tidal Waves hit South Asia

The Authority will be assisted by an executive committee of Secretaries which shall be responsible for drawing up the disaster management plans and coordinating and monitoring its implementation as also working out response to a disaster, an official spokesperson said.
