Delhi Police are providing security to Geelani Friday, February 25 2005 14:36 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Hours after the Supreme Court's directions, Delhi Police yesterday (Feb 24, 2005) provided security to S A R Geelani, who was acquitted by Delhi High Court in the Parliament attack case and was injured in a murderous assault earlier this month.
A posse of policemen was posted outside the Vasant Enclave house of Geelani's lawyer Nandita Haksar, where he is staying after being discharged from hospital two days ago, police sources said.
As Geelani has rejected security of Delhi Police saying he had no faith in it, the personnel of the force were providing protection from a distance, they said.
Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul, who has been directed by the Supreme Court to provide "such scale of security as required", is in the process of deciding the force, which should give the protection, considering the Apex Court's query as to whether he would have any objection in providing Rajasthan Police security.
Geelani's lawyer Nandita Haksar requested the Court that Rajasthan Police, which guarded Geelani during the period he was admitted in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after the February 8 shooting incident, be asked to provide security to the lecturer.
Geelani's family members and associates have repeatedly alleged that the Special Cell of the Delhi Police could be behind the attack on him and said they have no trust on the police force of the capital.
