Stamp scam: Telgi seeks time to engage a lawyer Friday, February 25 2005 19:43 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Abdul Karim Telgi, prime accused in a 1995 fake stamp paper seizure case, and his two associates, were today (Feb 25, 2005) produced before a sessions court amidst tight security for framing of charges.
However, judge U D Salvi deferred framing of charges to March 5, 2005 as the accused sought time to engage a lawyer.
The other two associates of Telgi are Ramratan Soni and Sanjay Gaikwad.
All the three are charged with circulating counterfeit stamp papers in the market. M R A Marg police in Mumbai had seized fake stamp papers from associates of Telgi in 1995 and registered a case against the trio.
Later, the matter was transferred to DCB, CID and finally CBI took over the case.
Telgi was brought to the court from Yerwada central jail in Pune amidst tight security and was taken back after the proceedings.
Telgi is involved in several such cases of circulating counterfeit currency notes.
The court has asked the accused to engage lawyers of their choice and come ready for framing of charges on next occasion.
