Sri Lankan Government not under threat: Kadirgamar Saturday, February 26 2005 17:25 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
A day after a constituent of Sri Lanka's ruling coalition threatened to quit, the country's Foreign Minister today (Feb 26, 2005) said the Government faced no danger.
"I see no danger whatsoever to the Government, simply because nobody in Sri Lanka wants another election at this stage," Lakshman Kadirgamar, who is on a three-day visit to New Delhi, told reporters.
The Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), a Tamil party representing workers of Indian origin, yesterday (Feb 25, 2005) threatened to walk out of the coalition saying it had not received the "respect due to it."
However, it stopped short of defecting to the Opposition.
Kadirgamar said, "There are bound to be differences in a coalition Government and sabre-rattling among partners, you can even see them in India."
He attributed the political impasse in his country to a "communication breakdown" and said efforts would be made to remove misunderstandings.
CWC has eight legislators in the 225-member House. The Freedom Alliance of President Chandrika Kumaratunga has 119 members with the support of the CWC and a few other defectors.
