Speaker overrules BJP's adjournment motion on Goa Tuesday, March 1 2005 11:44 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Lok Sabha was today (Mar 1, 2005) adjourned for 15 minutes amid uproarious scenes following rejection of BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) adjournment motion over the dismissal of Manohar Parrikar Government in Goa.
Soon after the House assembled this morning, BJP deputy leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra sought suspension of the Question Hour and admission of the adjournment motion moved by Leader of the Opposition L K Advani, saying democracy had been "murdered" in Goa by dismissal of a democratically-elected Government.
After hearing both Advani and Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee ruled that the motion could not be admitted and the issue could be discussed in some other form.
Advani said the office of Governor had been abused and a democratically-elected Government had been dismissed even after it had proved its majority.
"In such a situation, the best course is to go to people," he said.
Advani said by a "devious device" members were asked to resign even though an anti-defection law was in force.
He said, "what has taken place in Goa is against constitutional propriety. This is a mockery of democracy."
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha was today adjourned till lunch after Opposition members rushed to the well of the House protesting dismissal of the Manohar Parikkar Government in Goa.
