7.1 intensity quake in Banda Sea in Indonesia

New Delhi: A strong earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, was recorded today (March 2, 2005) in Banda Sea, east of Indonesia, the Indian Meteorological Department said in New Delhi.

The quake termed as 'great' by the Met office, occurred in Banda Sea, which is in the Pacific Ocean, at 16:12 hours (IST).

Its epicentre lay at Latitude 6.2 degrees South and Longitude 130.1 degrees East, the Met Department said.

So far there were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property because of the quake.
