'Text of India-Nepal extradition treaty finalised' Wednesday, March 2 2005 17:21 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

The text of the new extradition treaty to be signed between India and Nepal has been finalised and would come into force as soon as both the Governments sign it, the Lok Sabha was informed today (March 2, 2005).
In reply to a query, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said the text of the treaty was finalised during the Home Secretary-level talks on January 19 and 20 wherein the bilateral legal framework for combating crime and terrorism was given the final shape.
Indian property and vehicles were damaged in violence unleashed by the Maoists, he said adding the Nepalese Government has assured to take measures to ensure the protection of Indian interests.
In reply to another question, Ahamed said India, Bangladesh and Myanmar Governments have agreed to set up a techno-commercial working committee to discuss various issues, including the proposed pipeline through which India would import natural gas from Myanmar.
The Bangladesh Government has agreed to allow the pipeline, which would be operated by an international consortium, to pass through its territory.
He said India had already conveyed to Bangladesh that it would examine positively any fresh proposal received from the neighbouring nation in regard to facilities for provision of electricity from Nepal and Bhutan through India.
