Bilkis Bano to be cross-examined in court on Mar 9
Sunday, March 6 2005 10:25 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mumbai: The defence lawyers would cross-examine prime witness Bilkis Bano in the gang rape and massacre case, in a special court in Mumbai on March 9.

During the in-camera trial, Bilkis would depose before special judge U D Salvi amidst tight security.

Spotlight: Godhra-Chilling stories of the victims

During the last hearing, Bilkis had identified 12 accused, allegedly involved in raping her and killing her family members, according to prosecutor R K Shah.

Of the 20 accused, eight, including a doctor couple, are charged with shielding the guilty. The medicos had performed the post-mortem of the victims while six other accused are police officers.

During her earlier deposition, Bilkis had pointed at the accused, who had allegedly raped her and also those who had killed her three-year-old daughter. She had also mentioned roles of each of the accused in the crime. She, however, had not recognised the policemen but gave their names to the trial court.

She also identified the clothes she was wearing on the day of the violent incident.

On January 13, the court had framed charges against the accused for their alleged complicity in attacking a group of 17 members of a minority community, including Bilkis Bano, in Devgarh Baria village of Dahod district on March 3, 2002 in the aftermath of Godhra train carnage.

Of the 17 victims, eight were killed while six others were reported missing and three - Bilkis Bano, master Hussain and Sadaam - survived the attack.
