Chennai: DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) president M Karunanidhi today (Mar 9, 2005) described the eviction of DMK MLAs from the Tamil Nadu Assembly as a "highly dictatorial" act.

"This act should be condemned by all," he said in a statement.

He said as per Assembly conventions, statements made suo motu should not contain allegations. If any allegations were made against a member, he should be given a chance to explain, he said adding as per rules suo motu statements should be allowed only on subjects of public importance. But the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, in her statement, had made charges against a sitting member and the member concerned was not allowed to present his stand, he said.

When DMK members wanted the Speaker Kalimuthu to give Arcot N Veerasamy a chance to explain, he had ordered eviction of the members, Karunanidhi said.
