Eleven held for ransacking 'India Today' office Saturday, March 12 2005 19:56 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Eleven Shiv Sainiks were today (March 12, 2005) arrested for ransacking the office of leading news magazine 'India Today' in south Mumbai.
A group of around 30 persons had stormed into the India Today group's office in Jolly Makers II building at Nariman Point yesterday (March 11, 2005) and caused damage to the property.
DCP Dhananjay Kamlakar said that out of the 11 arrested, two have been charged with robbery.
Two MLAs arrested yesterday, Arvind Nerkar and Sada Sarvankar, were released on bail today, Kamlakar said.
The Sainiks were protesting the Group's invitation to Union Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar for an awards function organised by its Business Today magazine.
The police had detained around 50 Shiv Sainiks yesterday in the same connection near Gateway of India.
The Union Minister was to attend the awards function at a hotel in front of the monument.
The Sena had been opposing Aiyar for his "anti-Savarkar" stance and had blamed Aiyar for being instrumental in removing a plaque containing a poem by Veer Savarkar at the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
