New Delhi: A series of moderate intensity tremors jolted some islands in the Andaman and Nicobar region early today (Mar 13, 2005) Meteorological department said.

Two quakes, measuring 5.5 and 5.3 on the Richter scale, rocked the archipelago early in the morning, it said.

The first quake, which hit the region at 04:03hrs (IST) was epicentred off the north coast of Sumatra Island of Indonesia. The second quake, which occurred at 04:14hrs (IST) had its focus off the south coast of Little Andaman island.

Another moderate intensity quake, which was epicentred off the coast of south Andaman, jolted the region at 07:49 hrs (IST) the department said. It recorded 5.3 on the Richter scale.
