Disturbances in the house are Speaker's headache Wednesday, March 16 2005 09:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Ruling out the possibility of his resignation, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee last night (Mar 15, 2005) said that he was not for confrontation with anybody though he would not desire any transgression into Parliament or Legislature's authority.
"Why should the Supreme Court or any other court worry about the disturbances in the house? Let it be a Speaker's headache," he told channel NDTV 24x7 on the recent controversy over his suggestion for a Presidential reference on Supreme Court's interim order on the Jharkhand issue.
Asked was he ever considering resignation in the wake of no confidence motion talked about against him by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), he said, "Well I thought of it at one time when I heard that a section of the honorary members of the house had no confidence in me."
"I felt that why should I continue. Then somebody told me if my conscience is clear I must make my position clear. I did not want to go under a cloud which is artificially created."
Chatterjee said that at the coming Speakers conference he would like to keep the Jharkhand issue out.
