Over 10,273 people killed in the Dec 26 tsunami Wednesday, March 16 2005 15:49 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

A total of 10,273 people lost their lives due to the Tsunami while 5,823 persons have been reported missing with Andaman and Nicobar Islands topping the list with 5,764 such people, the Rajya Sabha was informed today (Mar 16, 2005).
A total of 2,39,024 dwelling units were affected, 35,605 cattle were lost, 22,750 hectares of cropped area and 83,788 boats damaged in the December 26 calamity, Minister of State for Home S Regupathy said in a written reply.
He said that 529 children have become orphans in the Tsunami and the State Governments/Union Territory Administration and the community have decided to take care of these children themselves and most likely no adoption outside will take place.
The Rajya Sabha was also informed that a total of 1,158 civilians, 335 security forces personnel and 993 extremists were killed in terrorist related violence in Jammu and Kashmir, North Eastern region and naxal affected areas during the period May 1, 2004 to January 31, 2005, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswan said.
There was a total of 6,208 dowry deaths reported during 2003 while in 2001 and 2002 the figures stood at 6,851 and 6,822 respectively, Minister of State for Home Manikrao Hodlya Gavit said.
