Trip down memory lane for Musharraf's mother Zarin Thursday, March 17 2005 14:37 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
It was a trip down the memory lane for President Pervez Musharraf's mother Zarin as she visited the Neharwali haveli in old Delhi's congested Daryaganj area today (Mar 17, 2005) where the Pakistani ruler was born.
Octagenarian Zarin, along with her son Javed and Musharraf's son Bilal, inspected the building, which once was the family's abode as enthusiastic crowds thronged the lanes and collected on rooftops to catch a glimpse of the high profile visitors.
The trio spent around 30 minutes inside the building, interacting with the current inmates of the house and frail Zarin on wheelchair recalled her memories of the family's ancestral place, which she was visiting after a gap of nearly 23 years.
"Everything seems to have undergone a change here. There is a new sky here. I remember meeting Aruna Asaf Ali the last time I came here, which was in 1982," remarked Zarin.
The trio also took part in the birthday celebrations of ten-year-old Aiswarya, a resident of the haveli.
Deputy Speaker of Delhi Assembly Shoaib Iqbal received the Pakistani guests at Daryaganj.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), the Alma Mater of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's parents, is all set to accord a red carpet welcome to his mother.
Begum Zarin Musharraf, who is an AMU alumnus from the early 1940s, will be accompanied by Mushrraf's brother Javed and son Bilal tomorrow (Mar 18, 2005).
