New Delhi:
Government today (March 19, 2005) ruled out any move to bring in major Constitutional amendments on the role and appointment of governors in the context of the recent developments in Goa and Jharkhand.
Turning down pleas for bringing in changes in the role of governors as recommended by the Sarkaria Commission, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, replying to the debate on proclamation of president's rule in Goa said, "We intent to follow existing conventions" which had the backing of the major political parties.
The proclamation was approved by voice vote in the Rajya Sabha thus receiving Parliamentary seal of approval.
The House also returned the Goa Appropriation (Vote on Account) Bill, 2005 and the relevant Appropriation Bill by a voice vote.
Patil ruled out suggestions of abolishing the post of Governor as suggested by the TDP (Telugu Desam Party) and also rejected BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) demand for immediate dissolution of Goa Assembly and holding of elections.
"We will take appropriate decision when the occasion arises. We will try to be as correct as possible", Minister of State for Home Affairs S Regupathy said.
