Karthikeyan finishes 11th in Malaysian Grand Prix Sunday, March 20 2005 16:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Sepang (Malaysia):
): 'Fastest Indian on Wheels' Narain Karthikeyan put up a fine show to clinch a creditable 11th position in the 7th Malaysian Grand Prix which was won by Spain's Fernando Alonso in Malaysia today (March 20, 2005).
Jarno Trulli in his first season with Panasonic Toyota came second in his 130th Grand Prix and also brought up the first podium for the Japanese company since they started racing in Australia in 2002.
German driver Nick Heidfeld of Williams took the third place.
Narain, who had finished 15th in the Australian Grand Prix, and his team-mate Tiego Monteiro, who finished 12th, did very well to drive a conservative race and achieve their eventual position after finishing 17th and 18th in the final qualifying this morning.
"The car felt different from yesterday as it was heavier with fuel load. It definitely makes a big difference as you go from quit a light car to a much heavier one," Narain said after the race.
"There is not much time in a one lap qualifying. Overall, I think my lap time was decent," the first Indian to race in Formula One said.
Alonso's victory somewhat made up for his team-mate and Australia Grand Prix winner Giancarlo Fisichella's non-finish after he was involved in a racing accident with Aussie Mark Webber of BMW Williams.
It was another disappointing race for the all-conquering Ferrari with Michael Schumacher coming up seventh and Rubens Barrichello failing to finish the race.
