Dandi Yatra: Rahul retraces Mahatma's footsteps Sunday, March 20 2005 14:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Ahmedabad:
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today (Mar 20, 2005) participated in the Dandi Yatra, which began at the break of the dawn from Kankapura in Anand district, Congress sources said in Ahmedabad.
The Yatra, organised to commemorate platinum jubilee celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi Yatra, entered the ninth day today, after it was flagged off by Congress president Sonia Gandhi from Sabarmati Ashram on March 12.
Rahul walked across a temporary wooden bridge built over Mahi river, specially built for the Yatra.
According a Congress leader Jayantibhai Parmar, Gandhiji during his Yatra had crossed Mahi on a boat while his followers had followed him on foot, as there was little water in Mahi during that time.
Because of the increased water level, Congress has built the temporary wooden bridge, he added.
According to party sources, Rahul Gandhi will walk entire morning and will leave the Yatra by afternoon.
Delhi Chief Minister Shelia Dixit, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Rambabu Sharma, Jagdish Tytler, Kapil Sibal, Sajjan Kumar and others also participated in today's walk, which will cover over 19 kilometers during the entire day and end at Kareli in Vadodara district.
