A huge cache of 5012 rounds of ammunition were today (March 22, 2005) found stashed in five abandoned suitcases in a coach of the down Dibrugarh-New Delhi Rajdhani Express at the Guwahati Railway station.
During a routine checking, five unclaimed suitcases were found in coach no AS-8 and, on investigations, it was discovered that it contained 5012 rounds of ammunition, Superintendent of Government Railway Police (GRP) Jiban Chandra Koch told sources in Guwahati.
Of the ammunition, 3255 rounds were of 7.62 SLRs, 1697 rounds were of .303 rifles and 60 rounds were of CTN rifles.
The passengers of the coach were questioned but none could say who had left the suitcases, Koch said adding no arrests were made or any passengers detained in this connection.
Security in the railway stations, coaches and tracks have been further tightened.
