Prosecution to file perjury charges against Zaheera Wednesday, March 23 2005 13:32 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Prosecution in the Best Bakery case has indicated it would file for perjury against prime witness Zaheera Sheikh, who turned hostile during the re-trial that is currently being conducted at a special court in Mumbai.
"We will file for perjury but it will happen later," prosecution sources said while claiming that Zaheera had lied during her deposition in Mumbai that continued for nearly 20 days during December 2004 and January 2005.
It is, however, not clear whether other members of her family including her mother Sehrunissa, sister Saeera and brothers Nafitullah and Nasibullah would also be named in the application for perjury to be filed by prosecution.
Zaheera had been declared hostile on December 21, 2004 by the prosecution and a day a later a private TV network had shown Vadodara MLA Madhu Shrivastava talking about having paid money to her.
Earlier, her family members had also turned hostile.
Meanwhile, a video cameraman who filmed the Vadodara police's rescue operation on the morning of March 2, 2002 will also be called for examination, Special prosecutor Manjula Rao said.
She said that the cameraman, hired by police to film the rioting incidents and rescue operations with a view of being used as evidence, would be called for examination after deposition of SP (Kutch) Piyush Patel who was then a Deputy Commissioner with Vadodara police.
