'Shortage of staff in CBI; performance unaffected' Wednesday, March 23 2005 17:44 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Government is going to appoint additional senior officers in Central Bureau of Investigation to probe the Telgi scam; Lok Sabha was informed today (Mar 23, 2005).
Replying to a spate of supplementaries, Minister of State for Personnel Grievances and Pensions, Suresh Pachauri said that there was a shortage of staff in the investigating agency, but this had not affected its performance.
The Minister said this when Mansukhbhai D Vasava of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sought to know what steps the Government was taking to look into scams including those like Telgi.
Pachauri said that, as on January 1st this year (2005), against a sanctioned strength of 5891, there were 4811 employees in the agency with 1080 vacant posts at various levels.
With effective use and deployment of existing personnel, the vacancies have not affected the performance of the CBI adversely, he said.
The Minister said that to improve the efficiency of CBI, Government has taken various measures, which includes modernisation, improvement in training infrastructure, housing and improving conditions of work and employment of the staff of the CBI.
