I am not against Islam but against 'jehad': Modi Monday, March 28 2005 10:47 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, in the eye of a storm following denial of visa by the US, has said he was not against Islam but against 'jehad' and terrorism.
"As far as Narendra Modi is concerned, I am not against Islam. But I am against jehad and terrorism," Modi told "Aaj Tak."
He said no true Hindu can be against Islam because Hinduism teaches equality of all religions.
Asked if he felt that he has become an international symbol of hate, the Chief Minister replied, "It is not for me to analyse but for my critics to do.
Asked whether the US action was a slap on him and whether he would take corrective measures, Modi, in an oblique criticism of Washington, said there was no judicial system in the world in which the same person can level the charge and also pass judgement.
Modi also attacked "five-star activists" in the country for indulging in tarnishing the image of the country for getting international awards and aid.
He suggested the denial of visa to him was like US President George W Bush taking a leaf from RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) chief Laloo Prasad Yadav's criticism of him to project a secular face.
Asked about dissidence against him in Gujarat BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and whether he would put in his papers if asked by party central leadership, Modi said, "I will always obey whatever direction the party gives and you won't even get the time for asking questions."
Modi said whatever had happened after Godhra "did not do credit to any civilised society."
