Earthquake measuring 8.2 rocks Indian Ocean

Tokyo: An earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale has rocked the Indian Ocean, triggering a tsunami warning, the Japanese Kyodo news service said today (Mar 28, 2005).

A second report from the agency quoted a Singapore meteorological official as saying the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.5 and occurred near Indonesia's Sumatra Island around midnight (21:30 IST).

In Los Angeles, US Geological Survey said an earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale rocked northern Sumatra in the same Indonesia region which provoked the Asian tsunami disaster in December.
