Gujarat: Cops to dig-up bodies to probe MLA's role Wednesday, March 30 2005 16:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Ahmedabad:
Police would exhume the bodies of two Muslim youths, killed during Gujarat riots allegedly by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP's) Radhanpur MLA Shankar Choudhary, to ascertain his role in the matter, Director General of police A K Bhargava said in Ahmedabad today (Mar 30, 2005).
The bodies would be exhumed for procuring the bullets, which were believed to have caused their death, Bhargava said.
"We have to conduct detailed investigations before we take any action against the MLA, who is the prime accused in this case," he said.
If the allegations levelled against the MLA were true then the bullets would have marks and would match with the MLA's licensed weapon, he said.
Chaudhary, along with ten others, have been charged in a case of double murder, arson, rioting and loot that took place during post-Godhra riots in the State.
Chaudhary, the sitting MLA from Radhanpur in Banaskantha district of north Gujarat is alleged to have led a mob on March 1, 2002 and had attacked minorities in the area and killed two Muslim youths with his gun.
Others have been accused of allegedly stopping and setting fire to the vehicle in which the injured youths were being taken to hospital.
When asked if the former Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Satish Varma had issued written orders last week to arrest the MLA, Bhargava said, "I have not seen any written order by the DIG in this matter. If such an order was issued then a copy would have been sent to me (Bhargava) by the DIG".
