Kanchi Shankaracharya appears before police team Saturday, April 2 2005 19:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kancheepuram:
The Kanchi Seer, Jayendra Saraswathi, today (Apr 2, 2005) presented himself before the police investigation team to fulfil the bail conditions in the 'Thirukottiyur Madhavan assault case.'
He was at the police team's office here this afternoon, coming from Kalavai where he has been staying since his release on bail from the Vellore Prison on January 11.
The principal sessions court, Chennai, had granted anticipatory bail to the Seer in the Madhavan assault case, while the Madras High Court granted anticipatory bail in the 'Ravi Subramaniam intimidation' case.
The Acharya was directed to appear before the investigation agencies between 2 and 3 pm every Saturday.
The Seer had sought relaxation of this bail condition and the Madras High Court had yesterday (Apr 1, 2005) relaxed the bail condition in respect of the 'intimidation case,' but a similar petition (seeking relaxation of bail condition) in the 'assault case' before the principal sessions judge was posted for April 4.
The Seer is the prime accused in the September three last murder of a Kancheepuram temple official Sankararaman.
On January 10, the Supreme Court had granted bail to the Seer in the Sankararaman Murder Case, while the Madras High court had granted him bail in the Radhakrishnan Assault Case on January 3 and anticipatory bail in a case relating to alleged tampering of bank accounts of the Mutt on February 11.
The Principal Judge P Murugesan had granted him advance bail in a case relating to the alleged August 3 last assault on a temple priest Thirukottiyur Madhavan in the city on February 24.
The Acharya had been granted anticipatory bail in the 'intimidation case' on March 7.
The Kanchi Seer had approached the court after Chitra, wife of Ravi Subramaniam, accused-turned-approver in the murder case, lodged a complaint with the Kancheepuram police on Feb 19, alleging that her husband was "intimidated" by two women advocates inside the jail at the behest of Jayendra Saraswathi.
