CITU opposes women working in late night shifts Sunday, April 3 2005 15:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Opposing the Cabinet decision to allow women to work in late night shifts, left affiliated Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today (Apr 3, 2005) called for unity of all trade unions to safeguard the interest of women workers.
"The Government would continue to take this kind of decision like allowing women to work in the night if all labour unions do not unite," said Tapan Sinha, all India secretary, CITU.
He was addressing a daylong convention at the all India conference of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh.
Stressing the unity of all trade unions he said, "There are still some public sectors which are operating, all are not sold but our rights will be snatched if we do not move unitedly."
The Union Cabinet on March 30 amended the factories act, 1948 enabling women employees to work in late night shifts between 10 PM to 6 AM with adequate safeguards such as safety dignity.
