Best Bakery: Court views rescue operations video Monday, April 4 2005 14:21 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
The prosecution in the Best Bakery case today (Apr 4, 2005) screened a videotape in a special court to show the judge the rescue operation conducted by police at the Best Bakery on March 2, 2002 a day after it was attacked by a violent crowd in post-Godhra riots.
The video is considered relevant to the case had captured the scene at the Best Bakery after police arrived and also filmed the rescue operation conducted by police.
The video has been shot by cameraman Gautam Chauhan who has already deposed before the court.
The court, on March 28, had allowed the prosecution to examine the videographer. It had also allowed the examination of the video parlour owner who had entered into a contract with the police to record the rescue operation.
The court allowed videotape as evidence saying it was relevant to the case as it captured the rescue operation of police at the Best Bakery.
The defence lawyers had objected to the screening saying that legal procedures regarding acceptance of a video film as a piece of evidence should be first completed before the video, shot by police, was screened before the court. However, their plea was rejected by the court.
A special court in Mumbai is conducting the re-trial in the case following a Supreme Court directive to hold it in Maharashtra. Fourteen persons were killed in the attack on the Best bakery at Vadodara on March 1, 2002.
