'Advani cannot be believed on Ram Temple issue'
Tuesday, April 5 2005 21:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: A day after BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) President L K Advani claimed NDA (National Democratic Alliance) would have found a solution to the Ayodhya issue had it come back to power, former party leader K N Govindacharya today (April 5, 2005) said he should not be believed, accusing him of "ad-hocism" over the issue.

"What the BJP President has said should not be taken seriously and should not be believed. They were in power for six years and could not utilise the time to find a solution to the issue. Neither were there any signs of any positive efforts," he told a press conference in New Delhi.

Calling Ram Janmabhoomi an issue of national importance, Govindacharya said, "What I want to underline is that the issue needs greater commitment. You cannot leave the issue and take it up at your own convenience."

He claimed the failure of BJP to build Ram Temple in six years of its rule had affected its credibility.

"We can't take their promises seriously. It was in power for six years but was inactive on the issue saying it was helpless due to compulsions of coalition politics," Govindacharya said.

On Advani's reported statement that hectic efforts were being made in the last six months of the NDA's tenure and a solution would have been found had it come back to power, he said, "Why did they prepone the elections? They could have used the time to solve the issue."

He denied having called former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee a 'mukhota' (mask), saying the comment was made by some other writer in a syndicated column on October six, 1997 when he was not even party president.
