Dandi (South Gujarat):
Congress President Sonia Gandhi arrived today (Apr 5, 2005) in Matvad village, the last point of the Dandi march, to lead the yatra where it will finally culminate tomorrow (Apr 4, 2005).
From Matvad, Gandhi led the march by walking nearly five km and was accompanied by a large number of Congressmen including top ranking leaders.
As she led the march, it was greeted by people waving tricolours with symbol of charkha.
Gandhi would pick up specially created salt on the shores of Dandi tomorrow to mark the end of the re-enactment of the historic yatra in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The 26-day march was flagged off by Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram at the crack of dawn on March 12, with the theme, "Gandhi is not the past but also the future".
More than 400 people from different parts of the country and abroad, including Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi's great grandson Tushar Gandhi, also participated in the march.
The participants, including a octogenerian look-alike of Gandhi retraced the steps which Mahatma took and travelled more than 240 miles through 150 villages spread over six districts.
Mahatma Gandhi had launched the Yatra 75-years ago to protest the Salt tax imposed by the British Government.
