Dandi Yatra was a 'lifetime experience' says Sonia Tuesday, April 5 2005 22:05 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Dandi (South Gujarat):
The Dandi Yatra was a 'lifetime experience' as it was the path walked by Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said today (Apr 5, 2005).
Talking to reporters from the exact spot from where the Mahatma had taken salt in his hands to protest and broke the salt tax law 75 years ago, Sonia said, "It was a life time experience to walk on the path which the Mahatma walked and the yatra has spread the message of spiritualism, friendship and brotherhood."
"The younger generation should follow on the foot steps of Mahatma Gandhi," she said.
Earlier in the day, Sonia arrived in Matvad village, the last point of the Dandi march, to lead the yatra where it will finally culminate tomorrow (Apr 6, 2005).
From Matvad, Sonia led the march by walking nearly five km and was accompanied by a large number of Congressmen including top ranking leaders.
As she led the march, it was greeted by people waving tricolours with symbol of charkha and decked up school children.
Sonia would pick up specially created salt on the shores of Dandi tomorrow to mark the end of the re-enactment of the historic march in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
