Fast track Court acquits 47 in Gujarat riot case

Ahmedabad: A Fast Track Court yesterday (Apr 5, 2005) acquitted 47 persons accused in a post-Godhra communal riots case in which one person was killed by a violent crowd.

All the 47 accused persons were acquitted by Fast Track Court judge C M Shah in Nadiad district for "lack of evidence", prosecution advocate Paresh Dora said.

One person identified as Mohammed Kala was killed by rioters who had also damaged much property in Sainath and town hall areas of Petlad town on March 2, 2003.

Acquitting the 47, the court observed that they had been arrested on basis of suspicion; there was lack of evidence and statements of witnesses produced could not corroborate facts.
