'Whole truth' on Fernandes yet to come out: Cong
Friday, April 8 2005 19:27 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Dismissing suggestions that the party and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government were working at cross purposes on the issue of "clean chit" to former Defence Minister George Fernandes, Congress today (Apr 8, 2005) said that the "whole truth" was yet to come out and nobody has given any certificate to him.

"There is no question of Congress party and the Government working at cross purposes. I think the whole truth has not comes out following the disinformation campaign launched by Fernandes", chairperson of party's media department Ambika Soni said.

Spotlight: Tehelka's ends

She was responding to a query on affidavit filed before the Supreme Court saying no procedures were flouted in arms purchase during Kargil conflict, while the party was of the view that no clean chit was given to Fernandes.

Asserting that the whole exercise was yet to be completed, she said that there were at least 34 to 35 cases pending against him but "first we took up Tehelka expose, then CAG faulting Fernandes in Casket case and post Kargil purchases.

"Neither the Defence Ministry nor anyone has given any clean chit to Fernandes in these cases", she said, adding that we never questioned the procedures adopted by the previous Government but scandals.

Soni said that the former Defence Minister has a long wait for getting clean chit and reminded that then Congress-led Opposition had decided to boycott him in Parliament on the issue of scam.

Asked whether any clarification was being sought from Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the affidavit controversy, she said, "The question does not arise. Mukherjee has already given some clarification saying he was misquoted".
