India, China foreign secys finalise talks agenda Saturday, April 9 2005 19:28 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Foreign Secretaries of India and China today (Apr 9, 2005) gave final touches to the agenda, including the vexed boundary question, to be discussed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao when they meet in New Delhi on Monday (Apr 11, 2005).
Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran and his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei are understood to have deliberated upon the guiding principles that are expected to be set out by the two leaders taking into account security interests, welfare of people living around the border region and other key factors.
Saran and Wu had earlier held two-day talks in Beijing on March 30-31, reviving the mechanism of Joint Working Group, to discuss the border issue.
Both sides had described the talks as "positive and forward-looking" and agreed to hold another crucial meeting at the Special Representative-level to address the issue from an "overall perspective" before Wen's visit.
The meeting between the Special Representatives (SRs) M K Narayanan and Dai Bingguo will take place tomorrow (Apr 10, 2005).
So far, four rounds have been held between the two SRs. While two rounds were held by Dai with Brajesh Mishra during the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rule, two more took place with J N Dixit as National Security Adviser (NSA).
This is Wen's first visit to India, as Prime Minister of China although he had travelled here earlier in 1994, as the head of a delegation from the International Liaison Department of the Communist Party of China.
