Advani hints at dilution of party's core agenda
Tuesday, April 12 2005 20:54 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Hinting at a dilution of the party's core agenda including Uniform Civil Code, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president L K Advani has said that issues change with times and one has to "face the changed circumstances as they are".

Refuting suggestions that coalition compulsions apart BJP had made up its mind not to insist on its pet issues including Ram temple, he said, "It is not like that. But it is true that one has to do it in changed circumstances. You have to face the circumstances as they are.

"I used to talk about undivided India (Akhand Bharat) but later nobody used to talk about it. It happened in front of us. Even Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya said that it meant a confederation of India and Pakistan."

Asked whether issues changed with times for the party, he said in an interview in the latest issue of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) mouthpiece "Panchjanya', "Issues keep changing. Many people consider the Uniform Civil Code issue as a fundamental issue. It is also a Directive Principle of State Policy in the Constitution.

"But even in our own lifetime, we have seen how Guru Golwalker (second RSS chief) asked about its meaning, wondered whether it would unite the country and pointed out to the many systems prevailing in the Hindu society itself. Muslim organisations had welcome his statement the most."

On the "dissatisfaction and complaints" against BJP within the Parivar, he said, "it has always been there. It could be because we work in close proximity".
