'Law and order in Gujarat far more satisfactory'
Saturday, April 16 2005 10:24 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Under attack for his handling of post-Godhra riots in his State, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi yesterday (Apr 15, 2005) suggested law and order situation in his State was "far more satisfactory" than several other States.

Addressing the Chief Ministers Conference on internal security and law and order, Modi said that law and order situation in Gujarat was "far more satisfactory" compared to many other States.

"It was "indeed sad that vested interest groups have treated the post-Godhra riots as a money-spinning business and some people still continue to strive glory out of this unfortunate event," he said.

He suggested that the Centre come out with a white paper on law and order situation in States in the last 25 years based on objective analysis derived from pre-determined parameters and data based on issues.

"Instead of any of us blaming each other, it will be advisable that we present a true image of our country so that we as a nation do not lose out in the race of attracting FDI," he said.

Modi said it was high time to take "drastic action against anti-national and anti-social elements, which have evil designs to weaken our country. Political patronage of any nature for such elements should be stopped".

"This can only be achieved through constant vigil, continuous upgradation and modernisation of law enforcement agencies, deterrent measures backed up by quick and severe punishment to the elements which are detrimental to the national interest. Any leniency on this count will harm the national interest," he said.
