BSF sounds alert for troops in Assam, Meghalaya Sunday, April 17 2005 18:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Shillong:
The Border Security Force (BSF) has sounded an alert for its troops in Assam and Meghalaya after yesterday's exchange of fire between the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and BSF at a border village in West Tripura district.
A senior official of the BSF's Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland frontiers, headquartered in Shillong, told PTI that the alert was sounded on Saturday (Apr 16, 2005) evening immediately after the Tripura incident was reported.
No incident has, however, been reported so far in the Assam and Meghalaya sectors. The BSF guards the 557 km Indo-Bangla border in the two States, he said.
An assistant commandant of BSF was 'killed' and three others - two BSF jawans and a civilian - were critically injured when BDR personnel fired at the Indian village of Lankamura in West Tripura district.
