B B Tandon likely to succeed Murthy as next CEC

New Delhi: Election Commissioner B B Tandon is likely to succeed T S Krishna Murthy as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, official sources said today (Apr 19, 2005).

Sixty-four-year-old Tandon, an IAS officer of 1965 batch, was appointed as Election Commissioner in 2001 and will be in office till June next.

Murthy, who assumed office as CEC on February 8, 2004, is to demit office on May 15.

Prior to becoming Election Commissioner, Tandon was Personnel Secretary at the Centre. He was also a member of the Delimitation Commission.

Tandon has held various top-level posts at the Centre as well as in the Himachal Pradesh Government and Union Territories of Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar islands. He had held the post of Secretary in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions earlier.
