An earthquake of moderate intensity shook Indonesia's Sumatra Island yesterday (Apr 19, 2005), the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The tremor, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, occurred at 20:40 hrs (IST). The quake was epicentred off the west coast of Sumatra, Met officials said. A slight intensity quake shook Myanmar, the officials added.
The tremor, measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale, was recorded at 19:34 hrs (IST).
It was epicentred at Latitude 23.5 degrees North and Longitude 94.4 degrees East, the Met officials said.
On March 28, a massive earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale struck Sumatra raising fear of another tsunami and causing panic along the entire south-eastern coastal areas of India and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The threat was soon withdrawn.
Sumatra has suffered numerous aftershocks after the December 26 tsunami that killed over 270,000 people in Asia.
