Musharraf should deliver what he promised: Abdullah Friday, April 22 2005 12:47 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Shillong:
Asking Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf to "deliver what he agreed" in Delhi on stopping terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah today (Apr 22, 2005) called for monitoring Islamabad's buying of US arms.
Although General Musharraf's visit was stated to be held in an "atmosphere of cordiality" and his talks with the Hurriyat Conference leaders were also "candid and straight", but it remained to be seen how far he could "deliver" what he has agreed in Delhi, Abdullah told sources in Shillong.
"I hope and pray he (Musharraf) will be able to deliver and his visit will end terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir," the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister who is on a two-day visit to Shillong to spread awareness on AIDS, said.
Abdullah, who is a Rajya Sabha member at present said with Musharraf's visit the Confidence Building Measures (CBM) started between the two countries would further strengthen the bilateral relations. But we have to see how far Pakistan's buying of weapons from the USA would "upset" the strategic balance of the sub-continent.
"If we are going for friendship with Pakistan, need for arms building is not necessary then," he said and added quickly Islamabad would not certainly use the F-16s against Afghanistan and China and therefore India should be duly "worried" (about this purchase).
