Police to question Teesta on Zaheera's allegations Sunday, April 24 2005 12:11 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
After questioning Best Bakery case key witness Zaheera Sheikh, Delhi Police would tomorrow (Apr 25, 2005) examine Teesta Setalvad in a matter relating to a probe ordered by the apex Court on the "flip flops" of the witness and her charges against the social activist.
Setalvad would be examined by Joint Commissioner of Delhi Police Kanwaljit Deol, who is assisting the Committee headed by Supreme Court Registrar General B M Gupta probing the controversy.
The follow up exercise by the Joint Commissioner was to ascertain the veracity of several statements and information given by Zaheera during the nearly two hour-long questioning on April 21, official sources said.
Zaheera, who was asked about her version of the riots cases and her comment on various documents including compact discs (CDs), had posed a query as to why she alone was questioned in the entire controversy. Her lawyers were not allowed during the questioning.
Meanwhile, the Committee has also asked Setalvad to reply to several questions pertaining to the Bakery case including the question "Whether she has seen/observed Madhu Srivastava and Chandrakanta alias Bittu Srivastava meeting/talking or dealing in any manner with Zaheera or any of her family members?"
Giving her time to file the replies, the Committee also asked her to answer as to why she preferred to include herself as a co-petitioner in the matters filed in the Supreme Court along with Zaheera and in what capacity.
Responding to Setalvad's statement that there were some kind of demand from Zaheera and her brother, the Committee has asked her to specify as to what were these demands.
She was also asked to specify whether she knew of any reason or ground because of which the Best Bakery case witness has been changing her statements frequently.
To the allegation of Zaheera that she was asked to sign documents in English without being informed by Setalvad about the content thereof, the Committee has asked her to specify as to why she did not prepare these documents in the language known to Zaheera.
The Committee has asked Setalvad to produce a copy of the CD showing the statement of Zaheera before Concerned Citizen Tribunal on May 11, 2002 as well as a copy of the passport showing her travel itinerary during July 7,
2003 and August 9, 2003.
The Committee, which till now had examined Zaheera and Setalvad for two days, would now meet again tomorrow to continue with its proceedings.
