Respect for human rights essential for development
Tuesday, April 26 2005 09:18 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Arriving on a visit to India, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said last night (Apr 25, 2005) that respect for human rights was necessary for ensuring development and security.

"We believe that there cannot be security without development and there cannot be development without security and we will have neither unless we respect human rights," Annan told reporters in New Delhi.

He said he hoped to discuss with Indian leaders UN reforms and other issues of mutual interest.
